Maggie's Madrid, NM

As seen in the movie Wild Hogs!

Java Junction, Madrid, New Mexico

A little artsy enclave in Madrid, NM (pronounced MAD-rid, not Ma-drid). Best coffee I've had in a long time.

Roadside Service Station

American Pickers would love this place! I was a little more worried about getting shot for trespassing.

San Miguel Church

San Miguel Church built circa 1610 which coincidentally is the same year the City of Santa Fe was founded.

New Mexico

New Mexico was nice but different. Surely I could not live there. For one thing I would miss the ocean and two everyone there looks like me! To prove this point, Mom and I stopped at Kohl's in Santa Fe (I needed sunglasses), a latino woman asked me in spanish if I spoke spanish. The Latinos can't even tell that I'm not one of them!

Anyways the trip went well, got to see a few more National Parks, got a new Pendleton blanket, and hung out with my momma. Pictures to come soon.

Preparing for Anchorage

My new laptop has this cute little application called Photo Booth, which allows me to take a photo using my laptop and immediately upload it. Here's me trying it out and showing you my new Snowboarding coat that I'll be breaking in next week in Anchorage when my sweet friend Heather is going to attempt to teach me how to Snowboard. And for those of you out there who know me well I will be taking precautions like wearing a helmet, since I'm about the most clumsy person on the face of the planet! Wish me luck!

Laptop

Once again I'm having issues with my laptop. It continues to shut itself off for no reason and freeze(usually while in screensaver mode). I've run multiple diagnostics as well as made repairs, no change. I've decided to switch to Mac, primarily based on my experience with my iPhone (which I'm currently using since my laptop is a expensive paper weight right now). I've been looking into a MacBook Pro and was wondering if anyone out there had any suggestions? Anything would be great, thanks!

Hi All,

I thought I'd update, not that anything is really going on but I have the time. I'm stuck here in Ketchikan until Monday and am bored to tears. The weather is kinda of a bummer. It's been hovering near 50 and raining since Tuesday. I know, I know, you all have snow and are cursing my name right now but I like the snow. Plus I got a new pair of snowshoes that I'm itching to break in.

Nothing big to report. I'll probably spend the rest of January in Sitka. I'd like to actually unpack and get settled considering I've technically lived there a month but I've only spent two nights. Looking forward to discovering my new city.

Oh Momma and I are thinking of heading to New Mexico in March does anyone have any suggestions? We're planning to fly into Albuquerque and head up to Santa Fe. The City of Santa Fe is celebrating is 400 year anniversary this year. I'm also hoping to touring Carlsbad Caverns and a few pueblos.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Luv,
Meg

LASIK

LASIK eye surgery went well today. After the surgery I slept for about five hours thanks to a little help from my friend Ativan. I can see better than I could without my glasses however there is a little haziness (like being in a smokey room). Mild discomfort but nothing terrible. I currently am wearing these clear lens they give you to wear for 24 hours after the procedure and at night when sleeping for a week (it's to keep me from rubbing my eyes). I look like Abe Sapien ( the blue guy from Hellboy).

Sorry no new updates. I have a few pictures from home to upload when I get back. Also since I picked up eight days of overtime in Ketchikan they're won't be any new photos of Sitka for a few weeks. Hope everyone out there had a good Christmas. Happy New Years everyone see ya in 2010!

Winter Sunset

GF's longest Helo flight ever!

Today, the day before I have to move, has been crazy. I was awoken at 0630 for a helo flight to Angoon. This trip is long enough that it requires a fuel stop. We left out of KTN around 0730 and arrived in Petersburg at 0900 for fuel. Then departed heading another hour to Angoon to pick up the patient. From there we flew another hour to Sitka. Dropping off our patient and fueling before heading home an almost three hour flight. The day was long, but the weather was awesome (only a few places of ice fog) making the scenery worth while. Here are a few pictures.

Update

I was recently informed that I need to update the blog. Honestly, I really didn't think anyone was reading it anymore. So if anyone is reading this, the biggest update is that I'm moving, again. I know, I know. This will be move number five in less than two years. I've taken a position in Sitka, AK. (Same job, just a different location) As many of you know I've been wanting this for about the last 8 months or so. The reason for the move is two fold, the first being that Sitka has a crew house, therefore, I don't have to pay rent or worry about someone watching my place when I'm gone. The other reason is the patient demographics are a little different. Typically in Ketchikan when on the lear jet I'm picking up a patient from a hospital, and while they're sometime acutely ill, most of the interventions are already in place. Sitka typically picks up patients from remote clinics in small villages. These clinics are not always staffed by high level providers which means we get to do a little more.

The wheels have finally been set in motion. I'm taking the ferry from Ketchikan to Sitka on 12/13. The ferry ride takes about 24 hours. I have a short 36 hours to get settled in Sitka before leaving for Christmas break. I'll be back in Ohio the 12/16-1/3.

Also news worthy, while I'm home I'm getting Lasik surgery (my Christmas gift to myself). I'm extremely excited about it, but a little nervous. It's a laser in your eye! But I'm stoked that when I get up at three am for a flight I won't have to worry about putting in my contacts!

Fall is officially here

Blowing 30+ knots with gusts reported up to 60. Fall is officially here. We've been getting 1-5 inches of rain a day. That is not a typo. Fairbanks saw it's first snow last night. Another summer gone :( Guess we'll just hope next years comes fast!
